How it works
- Add the passage: Use the text you want to review, within the displayed 1,200-word and 6,000-character bounds.
- Check the public web: Submit your text and Copyscape checks it against the web.
- Review each match: Open available source links and check quotation, attribution, and context for yourself.
Access and scope
Try it free, no sign-up needed. Your draft stays put when you switch tools, and each tool keeps its own result.
This checks the public web, not Turnitin or a private student-paper repository. Shared wording and legitimate quotations can match. Missing comparison data is unknown, and a match does not establish copying or misconduct.
Does Copyscape detect ChatGPT?
No. Copyscape looks for text that matches pages on the public web. It doesn't judge whether a person or a model wrote something. For that question, StudySim has a separate AI writing detector, and its score is a signal, not proof.
What is Copyscape used for?
Copyscape searches the public web for pages with wording similar to yours. Writers and site owners use it to find copied or reused text. In StudySim it powers the similarity checker, which lists matching sources with links so you can review each one.
Can I use Copyscape for free?
You can run a Copyscape check through StudySim before you sign up, on up to 1,200 words or 6,000 characters. Usage limits apply, and the checker may be temporarily unavailable at times. Try it on the free plagiarism checker.
Is this the same as a Turnitin similarity check?
No. StudySim checks the public web through Copyscape. It doesn't search Turnitin or any private student-paper repository, so it can't tell you what your school's checker will report.
How does a plagiarism checker work?
Most checkers compare your text with a set of sources and report where the wording matches. What a checker can find depends on the sources it searches. A match only shows shared wording, and quotes, common phrases and properly cited material can match too. If a match is a source you used, cite it by DOI where you can.
