This illustrative cell-transport example puts the source next to an outline, key concepts, and a review question. Open the source to check what the guide covers.
Cell transport
Interactive exampleRead the sample source
A cell membrane is selectively permeable: some substances cross more easily than others. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from higher to lower concentration. Osmosis is the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Both are passive processes and do not require cellular energy. Active transport requires energy to move substances against a concentration gradient.
An original teaching excerpt created for this example.
Cell membranes and transport
1. The membrane
A selectively permeable boundary controls how easily substances cross.
2. Passive transport
Diffusion moves particles down a concentration gradient. Osmosis describes water moving across a selectively permeable membrane. Neither requires cellular energy.
3. Active transport
Moving a substance against its concentration gradient requires energy.

From your material to your next study session.
- Step 1
Gather the material for one exam
Create a named study space and add the readings, class notes, or slides that belong together. You can also add supported recordings and public YouTube links.
- Step 2
Let your sources finish processing
StudySim extracts the source material before it generates the guide. Keep related sources together so the review can draw from the same set.
- Step 3
Generate a guide, then practice
With Pro, choose Study guide to organize the ready material. Follow your first review with flashcards or a practice quiz from those same sources.
A study guide for the class you are actually taking
A general explanation of biology is different from a review of the chapters, lecture examples, and terminology your class has covered. Starting with your own material gives the guide a concrete set of sources to work from.
Use a study guide for the first pass: identify the major sections, understand how concepts connect, and spot topics that need more attention. Check important explanations against the original material, especially when your instructor uses a specific definition or method.
Combine a PDF, lecture notes, and a recording
Your exam may cover more than one document. A study space can hold up to 15 sources, with uploads up to 50 MB each. Supported inputs include PDFs, DOCX, text, Markdown, PowerPoint, audio, video, and public YouTube material.
For a history final, bring together the lecture notes and assigned reading. For chemistry, keep the reaction notes and worked examples together. Generate the guide after the relevant sources are ready instead of building a separate review from every file.
Move from reading to active recall
A guide gives you structure, but reading it is only one part of review. Use flashcards for definitions and short explanations. Use a quiz to practice retrieving answers before looking at your notes.
StudySim keeps these outputs attached to the study space. You can also make a two-speaker podcast when audio fits your review session. Each tool reuses the sources you have already added.
Study guide generator questions
Can AI make a study guide from my PDF?
Yes. Add the PDF to a study space, wait for processing, and choose Study guide with StudySim Pro. You can combine the PDF with other ready sources in the same space.
Is the study guide generator free?
You can create an account and try a short personalized study preview before choosing a plan. It contains one key idea, three quick notes, and one practice question. Full study guide generation requires StudySim Pro; the preview is not a full generated guide.
Is a study guide maker different from a study guide generator?
The names usually describe the same task: organizing source material into a review guide. StudySim generates a guide from the ready sources in your study space.
Can I use more than one source?
Yes. A study space supports up to 15 sources. Generate after the relevant sources have finished processing so they can be used together.
Will the guide exactly match my exam?
StudySim works from your source material. It cannot know an unpublished exam or guarantee which questions will appear. Use the course syllabus, instructor guidance, and original sources to decide what to prioritize.
