How the counter works
Words use your browser’s language-aware word boundaries. Contractions such as “don’t” count as one word; hyphenated terms may count as multiple words. Characters count visible Unicode characters, so an emoji or a letter with an accent counts as one. Spaces, tabs, and line breaks are included in characters and excluded from “without spaces.”
Sentences follow language-aware sentence boundaries, including a final unfinished sentence. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Different word processors can use different rules, so follow your school’s required counter when an exact submission limit matters.
Counting happens in this browser. Your text is not sent to a counting API or saved by this tool. Leaving or reloading the page clears it.
