ASVAB content areas

Verbal and math

Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge. These four subtests also produce the AFQT percentile used in enlistment screening.

Science, technical, and spatial

General Science, Electronics Information, Auto Information, Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, and Assembling Objects. Auto and Shop are separate CAT subtests and are reported together as AS.

Study tips for ASVAB

Protect the four AFQT subtests

Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge produce the AFQT percentile. Missed items there affect enlistment screening even if a technical subtest goes well.

Practice finishing before the CAT clock

officialasvab.com says unfinished CAT items can be treated as random. Work a short set with a visible timer so you still mark an answer on the last items.

Learn tool and diagram vocabulary from labeled figures

Shop, auto, mechanical, and assembling items reward knowing the name of a part. Sketch pulleys, gears, and fastener heads from a training manual rather than memorizing isolated word lists.
