Active and passive sentence comparison

Compare these sentences: “The researcher measured the sample.” and “The sample was measured by the researcher.” In both sentences, the researcher performs the action and the sample receives it. In the active version the researcher is the grammatical subject. In the passive version the sample is the grammatical subject; “was measured” is the passive verb phrase and “by the researcher” identifies the agent. The tense stays in the past.

The complete walkthrough

  1. Keep both sentences together

Review the example’s active and passive sentences and the explanation of their roles.

  2. Make a visual lesson

Choose Create visual lesson. This topic can use native word groups and labels rather than requesting an illustration.

  3. Compare the roles

Pause to identify the grammatical subject and the person performing the action in each version.

  4. Try the checkpoint

Use the checkpoint to check the distinction, then ask a focused follow-up if the roles still feel confusing.
